how do I fix this error on my Dell laptop?

Question by Luke: how do I fix this error on my Dell laptop?
first it says preparing automatic repair, but then it brings up the blue error screen. it says ” Your pc needs to be repaired

a required device isn’t connected or can’t be accessed.

file:\ Windows\ system 32/ winload.efi
error code: 0xc0000185

you’ll need to use the recovery tools on your
installation media. if you don’t have any installation media, contact your system admin or pc manufacturer.

press enter to try again
press f8 for startup settings
press esc for UEFI Firmware settings”

please help me fix this, it’s been like this for months. thank you in advance!
My operating system is windows 8, i dont have installation media, and when i press f8 it brings me to the blue error screen. I hope this helps!

Post the complete model number and installed version of Windows as well as brand when asking for help. XP / Vista / 7 / 8 ?
Do you have or did you create the operating system recovery disc or DVD for the laptop ?
Did you create the operating system repair dis for the laptop ?

The operating system has corrupt start up files and you need to do a system repair or recovery
Press F8 chose safe mode back up all important files to external media then do a system recovery using the disc set or the built in recovery putting it back to factory.

you need to reboot the system you lost a driver it needs to run the repair also check the hard drive in bios to be sure it still shows you start it hit f2 than go to boot system in the bios look for the hard drive you need your start up disk windows xp, 7 , or 8 what ever one you use when you find the hard drive is there than exit and save put the disk in to reboot and hit the enter after it restarts good luck

    Hi Luke,

I am Kaveri from the Dell Social Media Outreach team.

To isolate the issue between hardware & software, run hardware diagnostics. If all tests are passed, it confirms that the issue is not with hardware on the computer.

    – Press the power button to turn on the system
    – Press F12 repeatedly or Fn+power until you see boot menu
    – Select diagnostic

and wait for the test to complete . In case you get any error please make a note of it
Otherwise it is a problem with the software. If you are not able to go to F8 option then it is recommended to reinstall windows through DVD. Kindly arrange a DVD and install windows on your computer.

    # Note:- Make sure you take data backup before installing windows.
